== Who am I? ==
I’m Julian (juliank on Launchpad, IRC), many may primarily recognize me as the maintainer of APT. I have been a part of the Ubuntu and Debian communities since about 2006, an Ubuntu Member since 2007 (17 years now, wow, half of my life).
Line 9: Line 11:
=== What are you doing in Debian and Ubuntu ? ===
I maintain my packages and (sometimes) help on IRC channels and on mailing lists.
I also backmerge many packages from Ubuntu and try to work together with Ubuntu developers
to reduce the differences between the two distributions. I also help other developers to build
software using my software or to adjust their software to use my software. I maintain several packages, like command-not-found, dir2ogg and ndisgtk.
My interest in Ubuntu started in 2006 from the Debian side, when I worked with @mvo on various package management stuff while still in school, such as APT, python-apt, gnome-app-install, software-center, and so on. I was working on packaging the Ubuntu tools for Debian primarily.
Line 15: Line 13:
=== In which other projects do you participate ===
There are some projects I participate in. One of my first projects was the [http://www.seamonkey.at/ SeaMonkey Deutsch] Project, which
I joined as the translator for the installers and (later) the release notes. Afterwards, I joined the Free Software Foundation Europe and started to write my own software. At the same time, I started packaging software for Debian. Examples for software I develop are [http://jak-linux.org/projects/dir2ogg/ dir2ogg] and [http://jak-linux.org/projects/ndisgtk/ ndisgtk].
In 2015 I took over as the primary apt maintainer from mvo, and started upstream branches for Ubuntu LTS releases, providing updates for the stable releases, and 1 year later, in 2016, I became a Core Developer.
Line 19: Line 15:
=== What do you wish for the future, what will you be doing ? ===
I would like to see more collaboration between Debian and Ubuntu developers. We have the common goal to spread free software all over the world. It is important that our communities work together.
We need to make laws, which require the use of free software and open standards in goverments and other public institutions.
We need to spread free software all over the world, convincing goverments, schools, universities, and all the other
users of non-free software.
My plans are to become a Debian Developer and an Ubuntu MOTU. I also want to switch some people to Linux.

== Your Comments ==
At the start of 2018 I joined Canonical in the Ubuntu Foundations team. Since then I have of course been significantly more active in Ubuntu than before. One of the first things I did when I joined was improve the merge-o-matic to add dynamic filtering via JavaScript to be able to easily search for my past merges and team merges - good memories. I continue to maintain APT and other pieces of the package management stack.
