Hey. I'm Iain and I'm just starting to get involved with MOTUing. I'm a Computer Science graduate and future PhD student (starting in September) at the University of Nottingham, England. | Just a guy who's too lazy to maintain an up-to-date wiki page. |

Here's me on Launchpad, and here is my blog. I've been a Ubuntu user since Summer (in the UK) 2006 and full-time since Summer 2008. I started working on Ubuntu development around February 2008 with no knowledge of the processes at all, and think that I now know a fair bit..! | Here's some static information. |

= Current focus = | Born in 1986, I spent 19 years in Cambridgeshire, England before flying the nest and moving a little way north to the wonderful city of Nottingham. Here I studied at the university and obtained a degree in Computer Science. At the end of this, I decided that I hadn't suffered enough and embarked on a PhD course. I'm working in the area of Functional Programming and Type Theory. |

Having reached DIF, I've switched from doing merges so much to checking sites such as multidistrotools and UEHS, as well as LP trolling for things to fix. I've also got a package in REVU which is seeking reviewers before Intrepid's FF. Please do have a quick look if you have time. :) | In the Ubuntu world, I started using in around 2006ish, when I built a new machine and decided that Vista wasn't going to get anywhere near it. I first started contributing 2008, with an upload sponsored by dtchen. I became a MOTU in February 2009 — if memory serves then it was actually St. Valentine's day, how fitting. :). |

I don't really have a favourite package or area yet, preferring to just pick up bugs that I think I can do and try and solve them (with the help of the awesome #ubuntu-motu!). If pressed, I'd say I feel a bit of an affinity with darcs, and have been working with various people to get this package in sync with Debian, thanks in no small part to a new Debian maintainer who has been very responsive and willing to help us. I hope in the future to get involved with Haskell/FP packages in general, with interest piqued by my PhD topic. = Bugs = == Examples == The full list is, of course, on Launchpad. I've just listed a few of my bugs (two in each "category") that have been uploaded. === Merges === * darcs 2.0.2-2ubuntu1: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/darcs/+bug/254241 * nepethenes 0.2.2-3ubuntu1: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nepenthes/+bug/240188 === Syncs === * griffith 0.9.7.1-1: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/griffith/+bug/256351 * darcsweb 1.0-1: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/darcsweb/+bug/256138 === New upstream version === * glom 1.6.17-0ubuntu1: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/glom/+bug/243163 === Bug fixes === * guidedog 1.0.0-4ubuntu2: 'guidedog menu item does not show in GNOME' and 'guidedog fails if $SHELL set': https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/guidedog/+bug/217232 and https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/guidedog/+bug/124230 * transcode 2:1.0.2-0.8ubuntu9 'transcode FTBFS due to libavcodec changes': https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/transcode/+bug/246755 === SRU === * pidgin 1:2.4.1-1ubuntu2.1 'Cannot connect to ICQ ("The client version you are using is too old.")': https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pidgin/+bug/244591 === Transition === I filed a lot of bugs for rebuilds for the libavcodec transition, thanks to the NBS list. Some FTBFS were thrown up by this, a couple of which I fixed. = Goals = ||Goal||Status|| ||Fix a bitesize bug||Done|| ||Fix a non-bitesize bug||Done|| ||Sync||Done, lots|| ||Merge||Done, lots|| ||Update a package||Done|| ||SRU||Done|| ||Package something new||goocanvasmm in REVU, eagerly awaiting advocates|| ||Get UUC status|| Got || ||Get MOTU status|| Pending || = Debian contributions = Working with pkg-cli-{apps,libs}, and pkg-games. These days I contribute mainly in Debian. I'm in the pkg-mono/pkg-cli-apps/pkg-cli-libs team, working on Mono and related applications/libraries. I'm also in pkg-haskell, working on Haskell libraries and applications (related to my day work). I believe very strongly that the absolute best way to contribute to Ubuntu is to contribute to Debian. Packaging teams are amazing: groups of people with specialist knowledge about their domain. Join one. Cherish it, nurture it and we will all have better packages and ultimately a better quality distribution. Debian is where the best minds work. Ubuntu is just the icing on the cake. :) |
